APPENDIX B
Perth-Andover Baptist Church Statement of Beliefs
We believe in the one true and living God who is without beginning and without end. He exists eternally in three distinct yet coequal persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. God is the creator and sustainer of the universe and all that is in it.
Deuteronomy 6:4; Genesis 1:1; John 1:1; John 4:24; 1 Timothy 1:17; Genesis 1:26; 1 Peter 1:2; Hebrews 1:1-4
We believe that God the Father is the first person of the Trinity. He is everywhere at all times and is all powerful, all knowing and all wise. He Reigns with love and care over all creation. He is the Father of all who are saved from sin and spiritual death by accepting His Son Jesus as Lord and Savior.
1 Timothy 1:17; Psalm 86:15; Deuteronomy 32:3&4; John 1:2; John 3:16; 1 John 3:1
We believe that Jesus Christ is the second person of the trinity who was born of the Virgin Mary after having been miraculously conceived by the Holy Spirit. Jesus being fully God and fully man lived a sinless life in complete obedience to the Father. Out of His unconditional love He died as a substitute for the sins of all people by shedding His blood on a cruel cross, was buried, and on the third day rose again in bodily form and then ascended into Heaven where He rules over all creation and intercedes for us before the Father.
Luke 1:26-35; Luke 2:7; John 1:14; Hebrews 4:15&16; Luke 24:1-7;50-52; Romans 5:8; Romans 10:9; Hebrews 9:22; 1 John 2:1&2; Ephesians 1:19-23
We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the trinity. He convicts people of their sin, draws them to Christ and to spiritual maturity giving spiritual life. He lives within those who believe in and accept Jesus as Lord and Savior and bears witness to their new spiritual birth. When an individual receives Salvation through Christ they are filled with the power and presence of the Holy Spirit equipping all believers with spiritual gifts for ministry in the church and the world. He purifies, empowers, protects, guides, teaches, and helps Christians to think, speak and act more like Jesus in their daily lives.
John 16:7-14; Romans 8:9-16; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; Romans 12:5-8; 1 John 1:7, 9; 2:3-6; Romans 8:26-27; 2 Corinthians 3:17&18
We believe that our final authority is the Holy Bible, being the Word of God written by men inspired/moved by the Holy Spirit. The Bible consists of 66 books of the Old and New Testaments from Genesis to Revelation without error in their original writings. It is the record of God’s revelation of Himself to people. God speaks through the Bible to reveal sin, draw people to Himself and to teach what is needed for Salvation and Spiritual Maturity. The Bible is complete in its writings with nothing to be added or subtracted from it; it is trust worthy, sufficient and is the Christian’s guide and standard of faith and practice. The Bible is the supreme standard by which all human creeds, doctrines and spiritual beliefs are to be assessed.
2 Peter 1:20&21; 2 Timothy 3:16&17; Hebrews 4:12-13; John 8:31; James 1:18; 1 Thessalonians 1:5-6; Revelation 22:7; 18-19
We believe that Salvation is by grace alone, through faith in Christ and is freely offered to all people by personally accepting Jesus and His finished work through His death and resurrection, and by acknowledging the sin in our lives and repenting and turning from it. No one can earn their salvation or way to Heaven. Salvation is not by works but it is a gift of God. Salvation is not only knowing about God but entering into a personal, intimate relationship with Jesus. At the moment of accepting Christ and His forgiveness of sin our sinful nature is quickened to spiritually renewed life and the Holy Spirit helps us to become more like Jesus. All Christians have the privilege to approach God directly in prayer through Jesus, the only mediator between God and man.
Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23; Romans 5:8; 1 John 1:9; Romans 10:9; John 14:6;
Ephesians 2:8, 9&18; John 1:12; Acts 10:43; Hebrews 4:16
We believe that God created men and women in His image creating us with such things as a spirit, emotions, and the ability to love. People have the eternal ability to know God personally. God created the first man (Adam) and woman (Eve) without sin but with the capability of choice. Through the temptation of Satan, Adam and Eve chose to disobey God; this brought sin and death to the human race and suffering to all creation. Sin broke the intimate relationship between God and man; however, salvation through Christ restores this broken relationship. Because of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross all people can know and experience His forgiveness, love, joy, peace & spiritual freedom.
Genesis 1:26&27; Genesis 2:7- 9, 15- 18, 21&22; Genesis 3; Romans 5:12; Romans 3:23; Romans 10:9; John 10:10; John 14:27; John 8:34-36
We believe that Christ is the head of the Church. The church is not a building but is made up of those who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. Christians are commanded by Christ to be baptized upon accepting Christ by faith and to unite with a local congregation of believers for shared encouragement and spiritual growth in discipleship in areas such as inspiring prayer, worship, teaching and service. Jesus commands us to tell the world about the love and forgiveness of Jesus offered through His free gift of salvation. Every Christian is commanded by Christ to use their spiritual gifts, talents and abilities to build and grow Christ’s church as the Spirit enables us.
Matthew 28:18-20; Colossians 1:15-18, 21-23; 1 Corinthians 1:2; Acts 2:42-47; Acts 4:32-37; Hebrews 10:24&25
We believe in the second coming of Jesus. He will return in bodily form just as He said He would. Christ will then raise from the dead in bodily form all who have ever lived. He will judge all people in righteousness. Those who have never entered into a personal relationship with Jesus will be sent to eternal punishment (Hell) and those who have entered into a relationship with Jesus (salvation) will enter a life of eternal joy and fellowship with God.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; James 5:8; Jude 14 &15; Acts 10:42&43; 1 Corinthians 15; 2 Corinthians 5:8-10; Matthew 25:31-46; Revelation 20:11-15; Revelation 7:9-17
We believe in the reality and personality of Satan. He is an evil spirit-being who opposes the work of God in the world. Satan was originally created as a holy, perfect spirit-being, but through pride and wicked desires revolted against God. He then became depraved in character, becoming the great enemy of God and His people. He is leader of all evil angels and spirits who are destined to eternal judgment in the lake of fire (Hell). Satan and his demons/evil spirits now tempt people to sin and turn away from God including those who have a relationship with Jesus. As Christians we can overcome the temptation and power of Satan through the shed blood of Jesus because Satan was defeated and judged on the cross. We can boldly approach Jesus our mediator for help, power, and protection through His Spirit.
Ezekiel 28:11-19; Isaiah 14:12-15; Revelation 12:3-4,7-9; Matthew 25:41; Ephesians 6:12; 1 Peter 5:8; 1 John 3:8; Revelation 12:9-11; 20:10; Colossians 2:15; Romans 8:34; Hebrews 4:16
We believe that the first day of the week is the Lord’s Day because it is the day Jesus rose from the dead. Following the example of the early church Sunday is our normal day for corporate Worship.
Matthew 28:1; Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:1&2; Hebrews 10:25
We believe in Believers Baptism. Baptism is the complete immersion in water of a person who has entered into a personal relationship with Jesus. Baptism is performed in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit and symbolizes the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ as well as the death and burial of our old sinful nature/life and resurrection to new life in Christ.
Matthew 28:19-20; Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Romans 6:1-14
We believe that the Lord’s Supper (Communion) symbolizes the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross. The cup symbolizes the shed blood of Jesus and the bread symbolizes the body of Jesus freely offered and broken for the sins of all people. The Lord’s Supper is normally celebrated once a month.
Luke 22:19&20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
We believe in the institution of Marriage and Family established by God. Marriage is between one man and one woman according to the Bible. Each family member – husband, wife, and child has distinct roles and responsibilities. Each one is to love and respect one another as Christ loves the church. Parents are to raise their children in a Godly manner teaching them through Christian example and Bible instruction.
Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4-6; Ephesians 6:1-4; Colossians 3:18-21; Proverbs 29:15; Deuteronomy 6:4-7; Ephesians 5:22-33; 2 Corinthians 6:14-16
